factor forthe estates of farleyer, edradynate, findynate and redgorton; secretary to breadalbane agricultural society, killin, and breadalbane highland gathering; vice-president of aberfeldy curling club, and chairman of local branch british legion. 1 16 2 1/14 ipm james center has kindly donated a new altar to the lodge. the altar has been made from planks of acasia wood which were reclaimed from the track at meadowbank velodrome in edinburgh which was closed in august. this altar will make a beautiful centrepiece to our newly refurbished lodge and hopefully over the coming years will see many new candidates taking their obligations thereon. on wednesday 21st march provincial grand lodge of perthshire west will carry out a ceremony of dedication and thereafter our newest candidate, mr brian ward hughes, will be obligated at the altar by our rwm bro. john duff. we as a lodge would like to thank bro. center for this very generous gift. 657's new altar master & wardens 2017 consecration of breadalbane 657 1905 members present for the dedication and consecration of lodge breadalbane 657 in 1905 657 2017 1/16 he took over mains of murthly from his father in 1934 and was a noted breeder of shorthorn and commercial cattle. during the great war he had enlisted in the argyll and sutherland highlanders, in february 1915. he did not go to france until the 21st of june, 1918 but saw a great deal of action in the last months of the war. on the 2nd and 3rd of october, 1918, lieutenant munro's battalion, the 1/8th argyll & sutherland highlanders, 45th brigade in 15th (scottish) division, were in action east of loos, at vendin, about ¾ of a mile west of the la bassée canal. the battalion war diary states " during the day the boche shelling was fairly scattered, he used chiefly 4.2" guns and 5.9" howitzers and did not concentrate on any particular area. his machine guns were more troublesome. by nightfall on the 2nd/3rd october, 1918, most of his troops had withdrawn to the vendin-douvrin line, our third objective, which line it appeared evident he was going to hold to the last. the night of the 2nd/3rd, (october, 1918) was very dark and it was only with the utmost difficulty that movement could be carried out. runners took a long time to reach their destination owing to the darkness, the complete absence of landmarks and the large amount of loose wire in and around the trenches. orders having been received about nightfall that the vendin-douvrin-la bassée line was to be made good before dawn. despite machine gun fire coming chiefly from the right, one of our patrols managed to reach the eastern end of 'humbug alley' near its junction with 'handcuff trench' ** by 5.00 a.m. the shelling had increased during the night but pushing boldly on, our patrols, followed by the forward platoons of the leading companies found themselves opposite their third objective by dawn... no less than 27 of the enemy were killed in these operations, thirteen prisoners were captured and 7 machine guns (including 1 heavy gun). for gallantry and devotion to duty during this action, lieutenant munro, of "b" company, 1/8th argyll & sutherland highlanders was awarded the military cross. the citation in the london gazette reads " for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. this officer, in charge of a platoon, consolidated a trench junction ** and made two blocks down the trenches under heavy shelling and bombing. on three separate occasions either one or both blocks were attacked, but he beat them off, although exposed not only to fire from the ground, but from low-flying aeroplanes. fourteen hours after the struggle began he was wounded, after having continuously been in the thick of it the whole time. ​ arcticle copied from the aberfeldy museum facebook page latest lodge benevolence - nov 2017 once again the members of lodge breadalbane have chosen to support four local charities, with which we have had a long association, and three national ones. the recipients were :- aberfeldy scout group £150 aberfeldy age concern £150 dalweem comfort fund £150 horizon lunch club £150 scaa (air ambulance) £200 prostate scotland £150 british heart foundation £150 interesting links? aberfeldy & the alamo brotherhood of values website visits webmaster login terms & conditions this site was designed with the .com website builder. create your website today. start now
